Ayurveda and Allergies

Spring is finally here in this part of the continent (Canada) and soon symptoms of the new season will arise. During this period, pollen will be in the air and can affect us in various ways: congestion, runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing.

In Ayurveda, spring is known to be the season of the Kapha dosha. During winter this dosha has been accumulating and it starts to show during spring season. Mostly made of earth and water elements, it will manifest itself in the body as congestion and mucus mostly in the head, sinus and lungs.

Other symptoms such as feeling sluggish and tired may be caused by excess Kapha in the mind and body.

Here are a few tips that can help relieve these symptoms:

• Make a homemade steam tent by boiling water, adding a few drops of Eucalyptus and Lavender essential oils in the hot water and putting a towel over your head and shoulders while you breathe in the vapors. Doing this every night for a week or two can really help clarify and awaken your senses to spring time.

• Mix ¼ teaspoon of organic turmeric powder with 1 teaspoon of raw honey. Take that everyday when the symptoms start popping up. Turmeric is well known to be antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic.

• Start eating lighter food, such as leafy greens, slightly steamed with a little bit of ghee or olive oil on top and add some pungent spices (black pepper, turmeric, ginger) to help with digestion. Quinoa, millet are also lighter grains.

• You can also drink chamomile tea at bedtime to calm the mind and dry the excess mucus.

Enjoy Spring!
